Ben Bernanke Says Low Rates Didn't Cause House Bubble...

Federal Reserve

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said the central bank’s low interest rates didn’t cause the past decade’s housing bubble and that better regulation would have been more effective in limiting the boom.

What policy implications should we draw? I noted earlier that the most important source of lower initial monthly payments, which allowed more people to enter the housing market and bid for properties, was not the general level of short-term interest rates, but the increasing use of more exotic types of mortgages and the associated decline of underwriting standards. Minutes of Federal Open Market Committee, November 3-4, 2009...

Federal Reserve

Federal Open Market Committee met in September suggests that economic activity has continued to pick up. Ben Bernanke Says Ready to Tighten When Economy Improves...

Federal Reserve

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said the central bank will be prepared to tighten monetary policy when the outlook for the economy “has improved sufficiently.”

“My colleagues at the Federal Reserve and I believe that accommodative policies will likely be warranted for an extended period,” Ben S. Bernanke said in prepared remarks at a Board of Governors conference in Washington, echoing language from last month’s meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee. “At some point, however, as economic recovery takes hold, we will need to tighten monetary policy to prevent the emergence of an inflation problem down the road.”
